An English-language translation of the biography of the famed Brazilian singer Elis Regina is being launched today (March 17) on the website connectbrazil.com. The 12-chapter, 363-page book, 'Furacão Elis,' will be housed permanently at the site and will be available to readers for free. The book will also include a complete discography.Researched and authored by Regina Echeverria, the book was originally published in Brazil in 1985, three years after Elis Regina's death from a drug and alcohol overdose at the age of 36. The English translation was undertaken by Canadian Robert St. Louis in the '90s. Regina first gained popularity in Brazil in the early 1960s and, along with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and others, was considered a pioneer of the tropicalismo or Tropicália movement. Her 1974 recording 'Elis & Tom,' a collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim, is considered one of the essential Brazilian bossa nova albums.
