Chetes Reaches the Top of Latin Alternative Charts

Mexican rocker Chetes reached the top of the iTunes' Latin Rock-Alternative charts today with his latest album 'Hipnosis.' Marking the third installment in his blossoming solo career, Chetes was the former leader of Zurdok, one of Mexico's strongest rock bands. Like any other vocalist going solo, he struggled to profile his own identity to the fans, but after two successful albums under his belt, the third installment sounds like a winner.

Chetes describes the album as his most personal album yet. In response to critics rejecting his entrance to pop music, he commented, "I don't tag my music, I don't think of doing Rock or Pop, I only care about the quality." The Latin Grammy nominated singer wanted to have absolute control over his album, so he decided to join Mexican indie label MUN Records (Le Baron, Hello Seahorse!), snatching a distribution deal with EMI Music, who is handling the simultaneous release in both Mexico and the U.S.

Even though the first single 'Arena' may be the edgiest of his career, it is already a hit on Mexican radio. 'Hipnosis' contains 10 tracks and was recorded at his home in Monterrey. Listen to 'Arena' after the jump.

Gepe Returns With 'Audiovision,' Download Free Single

Singer-songwriter Daniel Ontiveros, better known as Gepe has announced the release of this third album entitled, 'Audiovision.' The 29-year old has been fundamental to the new wave of Chilean pop, perhaps the healthiest region for the new niche of Latin Alternative taking over the South American market. Inspired by Chilean icons Victor Jara and Violeta Parra, Gepe revived the "melodramatic popular song," releasing two outstanding albums that have overcome their cult status to become influential albums in mainstream pop. 'Audiovision' is set to release next month through Gepe's renowned label Quemasucabeza.

The universally acclaimed artist fusions Chile's folk with synth pop and urban music, maintaining folk's poetic elements all along. Rolling Stone named his debut, 'Gepinto,' as one of the best Chilean albums of all time. Gepe earned international attention with a cover he did of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', part of the soundtrack for the 2009 film 'Sugar.' Needless to say, the announcement of his new album is very exciting news. The first single, 'Por La Ventana,' is an incredibly catchy tune, heavy on strings and risky on its quest to embrace folk, hip-hop and electronic music. The album includes a guest collaboration from long-time friend Javiera Mena, the other key figure in Chilean pop.

Premios Juventud 2010 Nominees

Recognizing the best in music, film, sports and fashion, Univision's Premio Juventud has just unveiled its 2010 list of nominees. In its seventh edition, the biggest surprise came via ex-RBD member Anahi sweeping the nominations with a total of nine, including the nominations as Pop Artist of the Year and Idol of the Year. This comes as a surprise to many people as her album 'Mi Delirio' had been considered a commercial failure and received lukewarm critical acclaim. However, it makes sense considering Premios Juventud is the only major award where fans are in total control of the process, from choosing the nominees to deciding the winners. Anahi clearly transferred much of RBD's followers to her solo career.

Also earning nine mentions are Dominican-American Bachata sensation Aventura and Puerto Rican singer Chayanne. Some artists like Thalia and Ricky Martin grabbed unexpected nominations, while other artists such as Tito El Bambino and Daddy Yankee had very few mentions considering the amount of success both reggaeton artists earned last year.

Other Latino personalities earning multiple awards include Telenovela star William Levy, Regional Mexican singer-songwriter Espinoza Paz and actor Gael Garcia Bernal. Premios Juventud is an award show directed to young Latinos in the United States, for which the event also awards scholarships to outstanding students aspiring to attend college. The celebration will be broadcast live by Univision at Miami's Bank United Center on Thursday July 15.

Paulina Rubio Confirms Pregnancy

Mexican pop star Paulina Rubio announced through her twitter that she is expecting her first baby. The 38-year-old couldn't have picked a better time to share the news of her pregnancy, perfect for this Mother's day celebration. Fashion specialists were deeply surprised by Paulina's dress at last week's Latin Billboard Awards, they argued it was too conservative and out of tune with her emblematic fashion style. Her conventional black dress now makes sense.

Paulina Rubio is married to renowned Spanish businessman Nicolas Vallejo-Nagera, famously known as "Colate." The couple announced the news stating: "I am going to be a mom! Life has a new meaning now. We were just told the greatest news of our lives and we'll be parents by the end of the year."

The Latin Pop diva is currently promoting her album 'Gran City Pop,' which has provided her with two of the biggest hits of her career, 'Ni Rosas Ni Juguetes' and 'Cuasa y Efecto.' She is expected to stop her promotional tour in the next few months.

Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull do Jersey Shore Soundtrack

MTV's latest reality stars Snookie, The Situation, Ronnie and JWoww are all set to premiere the anticipated second season of the hit show 'Jersey Shore.' In conjuction with the premiere, MTV and Universal have announced the show's soundtrack and first single -- 'I Like It' by Spanish heartthrob Enrique Iglesias and Cuban-American rapper Pitbull. This surely is an odd and unexpected situation, but it seems smart for all the parts involved.

The song references Lionel Richie's classic 'All Night Long.' In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest, Enrique said he planned to modestly sample Lionel Richie's vocals into the song, but instead invited him into his studio to record the song. 'I Like It' will be part of Enrique's highly awaited bilingual album and is significantly different than 'Cuando Me Enamoro,' the promotional Spanish language single currently climbing the Latin Pop charts.

The upbeat song will be part of the show's promotional teasers and is expected to be included across all of MTV's platforms, including its Latin music channel MTV Tr3s.

5 People Killed and 30 Wounded Outside Intocable Concert

Prolific Mexican-American group Intocable was on the news today after a deadly shooting was reported during their concert at the city of Guadalupe in Monterrey last weekend. The rumors speculated the shooting occurred inside the arena where they were performing on their 15th anniversary tour. In a press release, the Grammy-winning Norteño group lamented the violent act, but clarified that the shooting didn't take place inside the arena where they were performing, but outside at Expo Guadalupe, a big fair in Monterrey.

The members of Intocable and their fans heard gunshots, but was unaware of the tragedy that was going on outside the arena. The shooting resulted in the death of five people and over 30 wounded. Monterrey's government has yet to give details on the devastating event, but newspapers are already linking it to the drug cartel war taking over the nation.

Unfortunately, this terrible incident is not isolated, Regional Mexican artists fear the violence as much as the common pedestrian. Recently, singers Valentin Elizalde and Sergio Gomez (lider of K-Paz de la Sierra) were assassinated after performing at Mexican arenas. Despite the safety concerns, Intocable have vowed that they are ready to return to Monterrey to perform for their loyal fans.
