Few, if any, long-running music collectives can claim the same trajectory towards sudden international adulation after thirty years of making music locally as Konono N°1.
Then again, they're certainly also the only to hook traditional likembé thumb pianos into mics made from magnets found in junkyards and send them through colonial-era horn-shaped amplifiers, conjuring an inexplicable sonic tapestry rooted in traditional Zombo ritual music but bearing the tell-tale signs of electronic distortion and rock music repetition.
The orchestra is off touring again in the spring, this time through Europe, and most noticeably, with a stop at the next All Tomorrow's Party festival, (curated by Matt Groenig!), where they'll be joined by Malian musicians Toumani Diabate and Amadou & Miriam, along with many American and British indie acts. Check out their full tour schedule after the jump.
