As part of its ongoing celebration of Black History Month, the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York will premiere the critically acclaimed Jamaican documentary 'RiseUp' this Thursday (February 25). As Black Star News reports, the film is being billed as a "cinematic journey into the heart of Jamaica." After having already won the Best Music Documentary award at the AFI/Silverdocs Festival, many are now comparing the piece to similarly social conscious films like 'Hoop Dreams,' and some are even going so far to claim that it's the best Jamaican movie since 1972's landmark 'The Harder They Come.' Directed by Luciano Blotta, the documentary features appearances from Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, and Turbulence, among others.
This week's New York premiere will also feature a live performance by Judah Tribe before the show, and a special Q&A session with renowned reggae scholar R.A. Ptahsen-Shabazz, Ph.D immediately after the screening. A portion of the proceeds will also go toward ongoing relief efforts in Haiti, and donations will be collected during the show, as well. If you happen to be in the area, you can grab your tickets at the ImageNation Cinema Foundation website.
