French Composers for 'Paris 36' Garner Oscar Nomination

paris 36The Oscars, much like the Grammys, never fail to stir up debate among critics and fans. And perhaps no other category in the spectacle is as contentious as the award for best original song. As the LA Times reports, this year's list of nominees includes some familiar faces--and some notable omissions. Leading the list is a pair of French composers, Reinhardt Wagner and Frank Thomas, who are up for their song 'Loin de Paname,' from the film 'Paris 36.' Conspicuously absent from the list, however, are U2 and Paul McCartney, both of whom contributed original music to big screen productions this year. U2's 'Winter' song was featured in the movie 'Brothers,' while McCartney's 'I Want to Come Home' appeared in the drama 'Everybody's Fine.'

Other head-scratching omissions include Mary J. Blige's 'I Can See in Color' from the film 'Precious,' and Rob Marshall, who adapted the music from the musical 'Nine' to silver screen. Check out a full list of best original song nominees after the break.
