Abdullah Ibrahim to Perform in Johannesburg with New South African Orchestra

Abdullah IbrahimRenowned South African jazz composer and pianist Abdullah Ibrahim is returning to his home country for a rare performance at Johannesburg's City Hall. The show, which will see Ibrahim performing with the New South African Orchestra--a jazz organization he founded--will be presented by the Department of Arts and Culture funds.

The orchestra exists with the hopes of elevating a new generation of jazz performers to the national spotlight, and the concert goes out of its way to showcase new talent alongside veterans of the South African jazz world. On the veterans side of the ring, there's trumpeters Feya Faku and Khaya Mahlangu as well as saxophonist Barney Rachabane, not to mention New York players Cleave Guyton, Belden Bullock and George Gray, who are members of Ibrahim's regular jazz combo group, Ekaya.

The show is slated for February 27, and includes a matinee showcase of up and coming members of the New South African Orchestra.
