That's what people are speculating, after Stephen Marley's recent Grammy win led some to suggest that the genre has become too predictable, and therefore unworthy of inclusion.
As Caribbean Life News reports, many music insiders and critics have recently asserted that voters of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences have become too swayed by the Marley family name, and thus become more likely to vote for a legacy, rather than an album. Since 1984, the Marley clan has collected ten Grammys, among them. As Grammy vice president Bill Freimuth said, the reggae category is "not as competitive as we'd like these awards to be."
Believe it or not, there is a precedent for Grammy officials wiping out an entire category; they did it just last year, when they pulled the plug on the polka category after 24 years of existence, citing insufficient competition.
