Yeah, we know. Indie music is everywhere nowadays. It's hard to turn around any corner on the Internet Superhighway without running smack into some pretentious hipster blog waxing poetic about the latest obscure, (often) bearded acoustic group. And while a lot of indie music nowadays is kinda stereotyped with this brand of snarkiness, it doesn't have to be. Example A: KCRW 89.9 FM. Based out of Santa Monica, KCRW is actually a community based station, run by Santa Monica College, and is Southern California's largest NPR affiliate. So while you can come here for all your daily news and nationally syndicated talk shows, you can also find a bevy of great personalized shows as well. And for music fans, it doesn't get much better. Tune in at any given moment and you'll hear something you probably won't be able to recognize--but you'll definitely be intrigued. There are some legends and standards thrown in the mix, but the music hosts and DJs, for the most part, keep things pretty independent. It may not be for you. But it'll definitely be like nothing else on the airwaves.
You can find KCRW 89.9 FM in the Alternative genre of the SHOUTcast Radio Directory.
We tuned in on a dreary Monday, and here's some of what helped cheer us up:
